2:42 the king summoned 1  Shimei and said to him, “You will recall 2  that I made you take an oath by the Lord, and I solemnly warned you, ‘If you ever leave and go anywhere, 3  know for sure that you will certainly die.’ You said to me, ‘The proposal is acceptable; I agree to it.’ 4

8:16 He told David, 5  ‘Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city from all the tribes of Israel to build a temple in which to live. 6  But I have chosen David to lead my people Israel.’

[2:42]  2 tn Heb “Is it not [true]…?” In the Hebrew text the statement is interrogative; the rhetorical question expects the answer, “Of course it is.”

[2:42]  4 tn Heb “good is the word; I have heard.”

[8:16]  5 tn Heb “saying.”

[8:16]  6 tn Heb “to build a house for my name to be there.”

[8:16]  sn To build a temple in which to live (Heb “to build a house for my name to be there”). In the OT, the word “name” sometimes refers to one’s reputation or honor. The “name” of the Lord sometimes designates the Lord himself, being indistinguishable from the proper name.
